1998 Nebbiolo Sourced from grapes grown in the infamous Sanford and Benedict Vineyard along the Santa Ynez River, the ubiquitous morning fog funnels down the river from the ocean, providing the climatic conditions which gave this grape it's name (nebbia is fog in Italian). The nose is spectacularly unique in this wine. It's a sweet combination of rose petal, blood orange, molasses, white chocolate, wood-smoke and red licorice. There's a strong mineral structure to the wine, with pure bright cherry fruit, and firm acidity. It seems deceptively narrow on entry, and fills the mouth with delicious flavors that build into a balanced finish. I suggest either decanting, drinking over a 2-3 day period, or putting it away in the cellar for a while. The 1998 should age beautifully for the next 5-10yrs!
